What is Helix?
Helix is a unique, collaborative ecosystem and innovation hub for residential, business and public buildings used by multiple bodies within Newcastle upon Tyne. The district energy network at Helix provides heating and cooling to a range of commercial, academic and residential buildings, supporting one of the UK’s most forward-thinking urban developments.
The Impact
Originally designed to save over 30,000 tonnes of carbon, the scheme’s impact continues to grow through asset upgrades, increased efficiency and future network expansion. Around 400 new homes are planned for the site, designed with energy efficiency and low-carbon living at their core. The homes will connect directly into Helix’s district energy centre, further strengthening the development’s integrated, mixed-use design.
As Newcastle advances its decarbonisation ambitions, Helix will remain a cornerstone in delivering a smarter, cleaner energy future for the city.
